As you may already know, we are into the second year of our home renovations. You can read a big more about it here . Basically, we have reconfigured the upstairs of the house by moving the staircase. It has been a long and tiresome journey, especially for Dan, who has pretty much done all the work himself. So, after doing the bathroom, Rufus' room, the dining room – it was now time to turn the attention on our own bedroom.

A mishmash of styles and design influences, old wallpaper, paint that has faded, holes filled, a headboard I hate, side-tables that are too big, loads of crap piled everywhere. Depressing, right?
So when Wayfair UK challenged me to a Spring Spruce Up challenge, I jumped at the chance. I knew how I wanted our bedroom to feel, soft and soothing a place to relax and rest. A huge effort (mainly by Dan) to realise my dream space happened in about two weeks, going from bedroom horror to dream space. I will go into more detail of the makeover in another post.
But in this post, I wanted to share the details, and how you too can have a Spring Spruce Up – and with the help of Wayfair, I believe the feeling of a restful space is now a reality.
Colour Inspiration
Using the colour yellow as a jumping off point – in particular the Mimosa flower, which is in bloom in gardens right now. The Mimosa is tied to "sensibility" and is often connected to philosophers or problem solvers. It also means to literally "expand" your life whether referring to family, career or travel planning. Also, the pretty yellow spheres have become symbolic as the official flower to "Women's Day".
Yellow also signifies Spring, the coming of the sun, the yellow daffodils, the celandines and of warmth. So naturally for a Spring Spruce Up, it's the perfect colour.
Creating a boutique hotel look
Starting with the bed, I wanted to create a boutique hotel look, with crisp white bedding and soft luxe cushions. Wayfair UK literally has hundreds of products to choose from, so using the filters I was able to find the right bedding for me. I opted for this white duvet set with cute pom-pom detailing on the edges, it is100% cotton and comes with two matching pillowcases too. There is nothing nicer than fresh white bedding, it feels so clean and welcoming.
To compliment the Mimosa blossom, I chose these luxe velvet cushions in a warm ochre yellow. I love how the colour pops and makes the room a happy bright space. I can also swap and change the cushions throughout the year, and so changing the feel of the space. Think, rich green in Summer and earthy hues in Autumn.
Softening the space with rugs
Our bedroom floor has white painted floorboards, which we want to change as soon as we have some spare cash. But in the meantime, we have placed a hard wearing (never going out of fashion) hand braided jute rug. Jute is a natural fibre, hardwearing yet soft underfoot. After years of having bare floorboards, this simple edit has changed the feel of the room. It deadens the sound and brings warmth and comfort.
Changing up the window treatments
Opening the window on a sunny Spring day is one of life's simple pleasures. So I wanted to make sure the windows were treated to some new curtains. Our previous pair of curtains were linen, and didn't do a great job in keeping the street light from shining in at night. So, I chose these natural linen style black out curtains – and wow, they really do block out the light.
A Spring Spruce Up Q&A with lou archell & wayfair
Wayfair: What expert tips do you have when it comes to keeping your home organised and clutter free?
Lou: Oh that is the dream, to have an organised and clutter free home. I believe that it is something that has to be worked at, monthly. I like to go through rooms and declutter regularly. Sending things to charity shops or selling on local gumtree or facebook marketplace.
Wayfair: Are there any spruce ups or small refreshes you like to do as we transition from winter into a new spring season?
Lou: Always bringing nature inside. A branch full of blossom or a pot of flowering bulbs, instantly lifts the room and reminds us that Spring is on the way. I also like to touch up any paint, like walls near room entrances and door frames. Fresh paint always makes a room feel new.
Wayfair: When you think about a bedroom refresh, what materials, colours or accents do you like to incorporate and why?
Lou: I always like to think of a feeling, and for my bedroom Spring Spruce Up I wanted to feel restored and relaxed. Uplifted. The colour yellow is very Spring like, so I took inspiration from the bright yellow Mimosa blossom with it's pompom flowers. The room took shape from there, ochre yellow cushions, pompom details on the bedding – both echo the Mimosa.
Wayfair: When it comes to bedding , how can people use theirs to spruce up their bedroom while on a budget?
Lou: I know it sounds strange to say this, but the simple act of ironing your bedding really makes a difference. Believe me, I am not one for ironing – but I do know that if you want the 'hotel look' on a budget, ironing the bedding gives that luxe look.

My favourite item for the Spring Spruce Up has to be the pompom bedding – there is something so wonderful about sinking into a clean bed made with pure white bedding.
I hope you like it. I am over the moon with the finished space. It feels like the grown up bedroom I've always wanted.
